My name is David P——–. I did a week of SIA work at Glastonbury under Martin Michaels. I am rarely moved to send an appraisal of my superior’s conduct on a job unless it is so bad that somebody needs to know about their ineptitude. However, I have no hesitation this time around in breaking my usual silence and saying that Martin Michaels’ performance during Glastonbury was impeccable. Martin’s strong constitution, constant availability, and genuine care and concern for the staff under his command made what could have been an unbearable week not just palatable but at times enjoyable. I myself had a medical issue; I needed an inhaler as the abundant dust and pollen had caused my dormant asthma to resurface. Martin not only directed me to the appropriate place to get medical assistance, he called me the next day simply to check if I was ok. My phone records reveal calls both sent and received at various times of the day and night; he was always contactable, rarely missed a call (and if he did he called back immediately), and displayed an impossibly high level of energy for the whole week. To do this while still retaining strong leadership and sense of authority is to attain a balance that few are able to reach at all, let alone maintain for a week’s worth of arduous shifts. Over the years, I have at times been unfortunate enough to work for absent leaders who have a morale-zappingly lacklustre approach to the job, show complete apathy when it comes to the well-being of their staff, and do not lead from the front or by example. At Glastonbury, Martin embodied the antithesis of this sort of incompetence and I feel obliged to tell you what a refreshingly accomplished managerial performance it was.

I felt the need to write to you following our recent trip to the Isle of Wight festival, in relation to Martin and John. We had horrendous issues trying to get into the festival as we had been given the wrong wristbands and could not get onto the guests campsite, which we should have been granted access to. Martin was the only person who assisted us amongst all the staff and production teams we had asked for help to resolve the problem. Following this both Martin and John then communicated to all security at our campsite that we were staying there but had the wrong wristbands. They both ensured that everyone there knew who we were and didn’t have any issues getting back in following this. Their communication was first class, they were both always available to assist and help for any issues we had, not only to ourselves but to everyone staying on our campsite. They made us feel safe staying there and leaving our valuables in our tents whilst being out in the festival. Both Martin and John were approachable at all times, polite, courteous and always up for a good bit of banter! It is difficult to describe in an email, but they were always in control of any situation and we all knew that if anything did happen in our campsite they would have everything in hand. Martin and John are both a credit to your company and we cannot thank them both enough for the most memorable and enjoyable festival we have had.
